Racing does not require elite fitness. Local events welcome riders of all abilities and offer categories for beginners. The structured nature of a race gives your training purpose and the experience teaches bike handling skills that casual riding cannot.
Types of events
- Criterium (crit): short, fast laps around a closed circuit. Exciting but intense.
- Road race: point-to-point or loop on open roads with categorized fields.
- Gran fondo: mass-participation event, usually timed but non-competitive. Great for first-timers.
- Time trial: solo effort against the clock. Pure fitness test without group tactics.
- Gravel race: mixed-surface events emphasizing self-sufficiency and endurance.
Preparing for your first event
Choose a gran fondo or sportive as your first event. These are non-drafting, mass-start rides with timing but no aggressive tactics. Register early, ride the distance in training at least once, and prepare nutrition and equipment the night before.
Race-day tips
Arrive early, warm up for 15 to 20 minutes, start conservatively, eat and drink on schedule, and enjoy the atmosphere. Your goal for the first event is to finish and have fun, not to win.
